Gender-Affirming Speech & Singing

The voice is one of the most personal and intimate ways humans connect with one another. It’s not just the words that matter – the inflection, tone, and rhythm all play an important role in how you interact with the world and everyone in it. Your voice is a crucial part of your identity – just imagine what it would be like if the sound of your spoken (or singing!) voice did not reflect who you are. Gender-affirming care for your voice may help your voice and tone better align with your gender expression and/or gender identity. You may also hear this process called “voice feminization” or “voice masculinization.”

How do we start? We set your goals – we find out what you want and need from your voice and work together to get there. Common goals often include:

  • wanting your voice to sound higher and smoother
  • working towards a lower and warmer sound in your voice
  • navigating the vocal changes brought on my hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

We’ll play with a variety of exercises to help your voice become more flexible to meet your needs. All you need is a willingness to try making a few new and (potentially) silly sounds – don’t worry – I’ll make then along with you! Through work in areas such as inflection, pitch and articulation, I will do my utmost to help you find the voice that you need to feel confident about yourself as you move through the world.
